Iran: Rise in petrol prices fuels protests against the regime

* Hundreds of people have been killed, many injured and arrested in Iran since Friday 15 November during mass protests against rise in petrol prices and opposition to the Islamic Republic.

* Protestors have devised tactics and means of blocking the roads to prevent the police and the security forces reaching them. They have set fire to banks, mosques and government buildings. They have taken control of many areas.

*    The slogans chanted by the protestors clearly demonstrate the anger and hatred they feel about the regime.
On 17 November people in many cities like Tehran, Ghom, Gorgan, Shahryar, Gharchak, Varamin, Karaj, Kemanshah and Esfahan blocked roads by burning tires and entered into clashes with the security forces. The demonstrators have the support of the communities where they were given food and drinks by the locals.

In Shiraz people chanted: “Bullets and tanks do not deter us, Mullahs must go”, “Death to Khamenei”. City of Shiraz has been turned into a war zone where the regime’s forces have been firing at protestors from helicopters. People have set mosques on fire and blocked the motorway. Plain clothes police have been seen to fire at protestors. It is reported that 2 Commanders of Faraj Sepah (regime’s forces) were killed. Hospitals are treating the injured 24/7. Many hospital staff have been working none stop for 48 hours. Many areas of the city are under control of the people. The Alfarj police station has been occupied by the people.

In Rasht people shouted: “We are people and not thugs, petrol prices must come down”.

People in Tehran gathered in Khorasan square and chanted: “Death to dictator”. Tehran university students gathered and chanted “All political prisoners must be freed”, “Workers and students together”. On Monday 18 November, people were still in control of the road blockades. Regime’s suppressive forces arrested three students: Saha Mortezaee, Amir Forsati and Sarges Bagheri from their hall of residence. Their where-about is still unknown.

So far 8 people have been killed in Marivan and many injured. The regime prevents the bodies of the dead to be given to their families. Many have been arrested. The regime has practically declared Marshal law in Marivan.

Students in Tabriz joined the protestors chanting: “Don’t be afraid, we are all united”, “Unity, Unity, Students and Workers”.

Students in Oromyeh university gathered in the refractory and chanted “We will not rest till we get our rights”, “Students rather die than endure humiliation”.

In Tabriz, people gathered in the streets where they were attacked by tear gas.

In the city of Ahvaz, people have organised themselves in revolutionary committees and have taken over some areas.

In Kazeroon, the religious institution has been destroyed.

In city of Jam, people have blocked the main road between Aslavyeh and Jam.

In Karaj, regime’s forces fired at protesters. In retaliation, people attacked the Basij headquarters in Meshkin.

The commander of the city of Islamshahr has requested reinforcement because protesters have the upper hand.

In Yazd, people attacked the residence and office of the Imam.

Although the regime has shut down or limited internet, protestors have managed to send reports and clips of the protests.

Messages of solidarity to people of Iran

A message of solidarity from protestors in Al-Tahrir square in Baghdad with the heading “To sisters and brothers in Iran” has been sent to the protestors in Iran. Also, people in Shohada square in Beirut have chanted: “from Lebanon to Iran, People are united against suppression”.
